Using your lancing device is easy! Just follow these steps to get started so you can check your blood sugar with confidence.
Your tools
This is your lancing device. It’s a cartridge for your lancets. We carry 30-gauge lancets.
These are your lancets. This is what allows you to poke your skin to get a drop of blood.
How to use the device
1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Then dry them off completely.
2. Turn the lancing device cap counterclockwise and pull it off the lancing device.
3. Take an unused lancet and align it so the square end fits into the lancing device. Push the lancet into the lancing device until it snaps into place.
4. Twist the circular lancet cover off the top of the lancet.
5. Put the lancing cap back on over the lancet. Be sure to avoid touching the exposed lancet needle. Turn the cap clockwise until it’s fully secure.
6. Pick a depth setting. The lancing device has 11 depth settings numbered zero through five. The higher the number, the deeper the poke. Turn the depth wheel to choose the depth setting that’s right for your skin.
7. Now grab the bottom of the lancing device. Pull the cocking barrel back to set the lancing device. The release button will turn light blue and you may hear a click.
8. Line up the top of the lancing device firmly against the side of your fingertip.
9. Press the release button to prick your finger. When you feel the poke, remove the lancing device from your finger.
10. Now you should have a drop of blood. You can use this to check your blood sugar with your meter!
Tips
- Always wash your hands before and after handling your lancing device and lancets.
- Only use each lancet once. If you try to use one more than once, it can dull the needle and make it more painful when it pokes your skin.
- You might consider getting a special container to dispose of your used lancets. Many members keep their used sharps in a hard plastic bowl with a sealed cover kept on top of the refrigerator. This is especially helpful if you have pets or small children who might get into your garbage.
- We recommend you clean and disinfect your lancing device at least once per week. But do not clean your lancing device with any cleaning product that contains bleach.
