Your primary care provider’s goal is to help you stay healthy and improve your quality of life. They can help manage and prevent many health issues. But if they think you need testing or to visit a specialist, they may refer you to a lab or care provider outside of Teladoc Health.
What are referrals?
There are different types of healthcare referrals. You may be referred to get a test done—like an ultrasound—to help diagnose an issue. Or your primary care provider might refer you to a specialist, like a gastroenterologist for issues related to the digestive system. Going to a referred appointment can help you get the care you need and keep you healthy.
How do we make referrals in Teladoc Health Primary Care?
We choose care providers to refer you to based on their excellent track record of helping people stay healthy. We look at how well they prevent problems, treat illnesses quickly and make accurate diagnoses. Our goal is to connect you with the right care provider for your needs.
We do our best to refer you to in-network care providers who accept your insurance. But we suggest checking with your insurance to confirm coverage. Teladoc Health isn't responsible for any fees associated with a referred appointment. You can talk to the referred care provider’s office to discuss any fees and billing directly.
What should you do when you get a referral?
You’ll receive a message with a link to the referral order when it’s ready. You can also find it in “Your documents” in your account. You’ll see a care provider and their contact information on the order. Use this information to make an appointment with them.
Sometimes we don’t get it right on the first try. If you’d like to make changes to your referral or if you have questions, leave a voicemail for our referral coordination team by calling 855-617-2082 and choosing option 3. They’ll call you back. You can also message your care team in the message center. They’ll get back to you in 8 business hours or less.
What happens after you go to the referred appointment?
If you need a follow-up visit after your referred appointment, the care team will reach out to you.
And that’s it! Make your referred appointment as soon as you can. Taking this next step can give you peace of mind about your health journey. Together, you, your primary care provider and your referred provider can help you make important health decisions.
