If you’re new to mental health coaching at Teladoc Health, you might be wondering how it works and what it can do for you. To help you out, here are some of the most common questions and answers.
How can mental health coaching help me?
Mental health coaching is a way to improve your mental health and well-being. In our coaching program, you’ll work with a certified mental health coach who will help you navigate life’s challenges, both big and small. You can talk to them about whatever you’d like to work on—whether that’s relationships, stress, mood or anything else you’re going through. In each session or messaging conversation, you’ll have the opportunity to work through challenges, learn new concepts and ways of thinking, and set achievable goals to begin creating the lasting change you are looking for.
Who are Teladoc’s mental health coaches and how are they qualified?
A mental health coach is a trained professional who helps individuals develop self-awareness and equips them with tools to navigate life challenges. All our coaches are either National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) or International Coaching Federation (ICF) certified, which means they’ve been trained and educated in the best practices to help you with your mental health. This includes a year’s worth of training, hours of practice, mentorship, a certification test and more. The NBHWC and ICF credentials are the highest level of credentialing in the coaching world, so you know you’re in good hands.
What types of coaching does Teladoc Health offer?
The type of mental health coaching you’re offered depends on your benefits and mental health assessment. You’ll have access to either text-based coaching, where you can message your coach directly, or a combination of text-based coaching and one-on-one video sessions.
In text-based coaching, your coach can provide personalized guidance and support, and answer any questions about your mental health program. Your coach can also connect you to resources and digital activities that support your specific mental health needs.
If your benefits include both text-based and video coaching, you can get coaching support in whichever way feels best for you. Meeting with a coach by video can help you work through challenges together and allows for more in-depth conversations. You can also message your coach anytime in between sessions to share updates, challenges and progress you are making in the moment. After each video session, your coach will email you activities that support your goals and help you stay on track.

Does mental health coaching cost me anything?
No, the coaching program is at no cost to all Teladoc Health members.
Will I hear from my coach in between sessions?
After each session, you will receive a follow-up email with links to one or two digital activities that are relevant to you—we call these “skills practice.” If you’d like to connect with your coach in between sessions, you can message them anytime through the message center. You’ll find the message center in the top right section of the website or the bottom navigation if you’re using the mobile app. Your coach will typically respond within 1-2 business days.
What do I do if I have technical or connection issues during a coaching session?
If you and your coach are having a difficult time connecting, your coach will try to contact you through an alternative method. For example, if you keep getting disconnected during a video session, your coach may call you on your preferred phone number. You can always change your preferred method of connecting, but if the issue persists, please call our Member Support team at 800-945-4355.
What happens if I am late, need to cancel, or miss an appointment?
If you are more than 10 minutes late to a session, you will be asked to reschedule. Our coaching team will try to reach you by phone and may leave a voicemail. They’ll also send you an email with instructions on how to reschedule the session. If you must cancel a session, we ask that you do so at least four hours in advance and schedule a makeup session as soon as possible.
Can I switch mental health coaches?
Yes, you can. To switch your mental health coach, send an email to mystrengthcoaching@teladochealth.com from the email associated with your account, requesting a switch of coaches. Once we receive your email, we will notify you of the switch.
